My bio

I am board-certified in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a distinction held by only a small number of physicians nationally.

I earned my MD and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Heidelberg Medical School in Germany, followed by an emergency medicine residency and ultrasound fellowship-in-residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I completed additional fellowship training in critical care medicine, ECMO, and clinical research at the University of Pittsburgh, and further specialized in emergency medical services through a fellowship at the University of Florida. I also hold an MBA from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville.

At the University of Florida, I serve as Associate Professor & Vice-Chair of Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine, with affiliate appointments in the Department of Anesthesiology, the Department of Environmental & Global ÍøºìºÚÁÏ, and the UF Center for African Studies. I am the Executive Director (Emergency Medicine) of the ÍøºìºÚÁÏ Critical Care Organization and Co-Director of the ÍøºìºÚÁÏ Clinical Ethics Service.

Within the Department of Emergency Medicine, I serve as Vice-Chair of Critical Care Medicine, Chief of the Division of Critical Care Medicine, and Director of the Section of Global ÍøºìºÚÁÏ & Medicine in Austere Environments. I am the Director of the Emergency Department’s Extracorporeal CPR Program and the Emergency Resuscitation Service, and serve as Program Director for the Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship and Associate Program Director for the EMS Fellowship.

Clinically, I treat patients in all surgical intensive care units (ICU), with a focus on cardiothoracic critical care and mechanical circulatory support. I also see patients in the adult emergency department.

Beyond ÍøºìºÚÁÏ, I am the Medical Director of the Critical Care Division for Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR).

I am an active member of multiple professional and scientific societies, and have been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Emergency Medical Services (FAEMS), a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM), and a Fellow the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM). As a federally funded investigator, I have authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and received regional and national awards for my research and academic contributions.
