I am board-certified in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a distinction held by only a small number of physicians nationally.
I earned my MD and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Heidelberg Medical School in Germany, followed by an emergency medicine residency and ultrasound fellowship-in-residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I completed additional fellowship training in critical care medicine, ECMO, and clinical research at the University of Pittsburgh, and further specialized in emergency medical services through a fellowship at the University of Florida. I also hold an MBA from the University of Tennessee – Knoxville.
At the University of Florida, I serve as the Chief of Service of Emergency Medicine for ÍøºìºÚÁÏ Shands and as Vice-Chair & Chief of Critical Care Medicine in the COM Department of Emergency Medicine. I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, with affiliate appointments in the COM Department of Anesthesiology, the CPPH Department of Environmental & Global ÍøºìºÚÁÏ, and the UF Center for African Studies. I am the Executive Director (Emergency Medicine) of the ÍøºìºÚÁÏ Critical Care Organization and Co-Director of the ÍøºìºÚÁÏ Clinical Ethics Service.
My other roles in the Department of Emergency Medicine include serving as Director of the Section of Global ÍøºìºÚÁÏ & Medicine in Austere Environments and as Director of the Emergency Department’s Extracorporeal CPR Program & Emergency Resuscitation Service. I also serve as Program Director for the Global Emergency Medicine Fellowship and Associate Program Director for the EMS Fellowship.
Clinically, I treat patients in all surgical intensive care units (ICU), with a focus on cardiothoracic critical care and mechanical circulatory support. I also see patients in the adult emergency department.
Beyond ÍøºìºÚÁÏ, I am the Medical Director of the Critical Care Division for Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR).
I am an active member of multiple professional and scientific societies, and have been recognized as a Fellow of the Academy of Emergency Medical Services (FAEMS), a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM), and a Fellow the American College of Critical Care Medicine (FCCM). As a federally funded investigator, I have authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and received regional and national awards for my research and academic contributions.
