Tension-Free Vaginal Tape

Incontinence surgery has come a long way in recent years. Previous surgeries for this condition required a large abdominal incision, a minimum of t wo days in the hospital, and a four-week recovery period. Today, Shands offers a new minimally invasive procedure called Tension-Free Vaginal Tape (TVT), which has many benefits compared to previously used procedures. Patients tolerate the procedure very well.

TVT is a 30- to 45-minute outpatient procedure performed under local or general anesthesia using two small abdominal incisions. Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities within two to five days, and complete recovery is expected within two to three weeks.

Compared to patients who undergo the older procedures, patients who undergo TVT spend less time in the hospital, have less discomfort, smaller scars, and a greater chance of curing their problem.
