Heart attack, also called myocardial infarction, is a leading cause of death in the U.S. and is primarily caused by coronary artery disease. Known as the 鈥渟ilent killer鈥� because people often are not aware they are at risk, coronary artery disease is a condition where fatty plaque builds up in the arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle, leading to blockages of blood flow.
Any interruption of blood supply to the heart muscle results in cellular death of muscle tissue. Even when a person survives heart attack, the heart muscle will be damaged 鈥� placing the patient at risk of developing heart failure or rhythm disorders that significantly impact quality of life and can lead to death.
