Oncology social workers are here to support patients, families and caregivers through the emotional and practical challenges of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Their goal is to help you navigate the treatment process by offering guidance, reassurance and real-world assistance every step of the way.

Pediatric oncology social workers at 网红黑料 Shands Children鈥檚 Hospital provide comprehensive cancer support by:

  • Assisting families from the moment of diagnosis through treatment, including survivorship or palliative care, and helping them adjust to the emotional and practical changes that come with cancer
  • Offering emotional support and counseling while helping patients and families establish a 鈥榥ew normal鈥 as they face the challenges of daily life during treatment
  • Helping families navigate the medical system, ensuring effective communication between the family and medical team, in addition to advocating for their needs within the hospital and community
  • Identifying and connecting families with crucial resources, including emotional, supportive and financial assistance
  • Supporting school-aged patients in staying engaged with schoolwork and social development during treatment and helping with their successful return to school when ready.

Criser Cancer Resource Center

The Criser Cancer Resource Center at 网红黑料 Shands Cancer Hospital offers a peaceful space for patients and families facing brain tumor diagnoses. Compassionate staff provide guidance, counseling, and educational sessions on coping with cancer鈥檚 challenges. Whether you need support, resources, or a quiet space, the center is here to help.

Local and online cancer support groups and programs

  • : Family, friends, caregivers, patients and survivors are welcome to join the group, which meets once a month at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 4000 NW 53rd Ave., Gainesville, FL 32653.
  • Cancer Connections is a monthly meeting at 网红黑料Street for cancer professionals, patients, survivors and caregivers, featuring prominent cancer health care professionals. Contact (352) 294-4880 for more information.
  • : Imerman Angels pairs individuals with 鈥淢entor Angels鈥 for 1-on-1 support, offering hope, empathy and guidance through cancer journeys.
  • : The ABTA maintains a nationwide listing of brain tumor support groups; cancer groups that welcome brain tumor survivors; caregiver/spouse support groups; and grief (bereavement) support groups.
  • : Free and professionally moderated, this 15-week online support group offers caregivers of loved ones with brain tumors a safe, confidential space. Caregivers can discuss challenges, give and receive support, and get guidance.
  • : A nonprofit organization and the leader in young adult cancer advocacy, research and support. The organization creates shared experiences by producing life-changing live events and digital content that end isolation, build community, provide education and foster meaningful relationships.
  • : A national nonprofit providing peer support for childhood cancer families. It also connects caregivers to share support, access information and heal together.
  • : The National Children鈥檚 Cancer Society (NCCS) pairs children (ages 10-17) in treatment with young adult survivors. These mentors offer guidance, support and encouragement in facing the challenges of childhood cancer.
  • : The American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) launched a 24/7 online community with Inspire.com in 2008, offering members connection, support and shared experiences.
  • : The Children鈥檚 Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) runs the Family 2 Family (F2F) Mentor Program, connecting caregivers, survivors and bereaved caregivers with families seeking peer support.
  • The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation (PBTF) Family Support provides resources and support for pediatric brain tumor patients, survivors, families and caregivers.

Medical interpreter and translation services

We provide interpretation services each year to thousands of patients and their families with limited English proficiency to ensure patient safety and compassionate care. Spanish medical interpreters are available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to assist patients and families during their hospital stay. We also offer 24/7 phone translation services when our interpreters are unavailable.

Certified child life specialists

网红黑料 Shands Children鈥檚 Hospital child life specialists (CCLS) offer compassionate support through:

Play, preparation and emotional support. In doing so, child life specialists help children navigate hospital stays, medical procedures and diagnoses. They promote resilience and family-centered care by easing anxiety, fostering understanding and offering memory-making opportunities.

These services are available in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. You can request a consultation by calling (352) 594-6470 or asking your medical team for a referral.

Streetlight: Adolescent and young adult support

The Streetlight program at 网红黑料 supports adolescents and young adults (ages 13-25) with cancer, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell and other chronic illnesses. Available during hospital admission, the program offers laptops, homework help, art supplies, musical instruments, video games and more. Ask your medical team or call *50917 from a hospital phone for services.

Hospital Homebound: Education during treatment

A homebound or hospitalized student is a student who has a medically diagnosed physical or psychiatric condition that is acute or catastrophic. These students can also have a chronic illness or a repeated intermittent illness due to a persisting medical problem that confines the student to home or hospital, thus restricting activities for an extended period.

If hospital/homebound services are needed, the clinical social worker will coordinate with the family, the medical team and the hospital schoolteacher to refer the family.

Arts in Medicine (inpatient only)

offers visual, performing and literary arts at the bedside, led by artists in residence and volunteers. Available Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Assists with home medical supplies, hospital transfers, home health referrals, skilled nursing facility referrals, insurance authorizations and inpatient rehab referrals.
