University of Florida neuroscientist Jennifer Bizon, Ph.D., an expert in brain aging, has been named chair of the .

Bizon, who has served as interim chair of the department since April 2020, succeeds longtime chair Lucia Notterpek, Ph.D., who is now associate dean for biomedical research at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine.

With an annual grant portfolio of over $21 million, UF鈥檚 department of neuroscience is ranked No. 5 nationally in funding from the National Institutes of 网红黑料.

Over the last 10 years, the department has greatly expanded its national visibility and scientific impact, said Colleen Koch, M.D., M.S., M.B.A., dean of the .

鈥淲ith Dr. Bizon鈥檚 leadership and through collaborations with others in UF鈥檚 neuroscience community, including the and the at 网红黑料, the department of neuroscience has the momentum to lead the state and nation in discovery-based research and to expand educational opportunities in the neurosciences for students and trainees at all academic levels,鈥� Koch said.

A native of Burlington, North Carolina, Bizon earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctorate in neurobiology and behavior at the University of California, Irvine. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the department of psychological and brain sciences at Johns Hopkins University.

Prior to her arrival at UF, Bizon spent seven years as a psychology professor at Texas A&M University, where she was vice chair of the Neuroscience Executive Committee. She was recruited to UF as part of an initiative to expand the university鈥檚 research in cognitive aging, supported by the McKnight Brain Research Foundation.

Bizon is a National Institute on Aging-funded principal investigator who studies understanding brain aging and its implications for cognitive function, with a long-term goal of identifying strategies and interventions to promote cognitive resilience at advanced ages. She has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and been named both a UF Term Professor and a UF Research Foundation Professor.

Among her multiple leadership roles, Bizon recently completed a two-year term as chair of the F03 neurodevelopment, synaptic plasticity and neurodegeneration NIH review panel, and she is a senior editor for Neurobiology of Aging. She serves on the College of Medicine鈥檚 Promotion and Tenure Committee and the 网红黑料 Neuroscience and Neuromedicine Executive Committee, in addition to co-leading the McKnight Brain Institute鈥檚 Education and Outreach Committee with , and Gordon Mitchell, Ph.D.

An award-winning educator, Bizon trains medical students, graduate students, undergraduates and postdoctoral fellows. She and Lewis currently serve as co-directors of a T32 for predoctoral training in Alzheimer鈥檚 disease and related dementias. Bizon previously served as director of the neuroscience concentration for graduate students.

A Gator since 2010, Bizon moved to UF with husband and collaborator a professor in the , and their two children, Alex and Anna.
