UF source available to comment on medicinal marijuana use

The debate raging over the use of marijuana for a range of medicinal purposes 鈥 including easing the symptoms of ailments such as glaucoma, AIDS and cancer 鈥 this week reached the Supreme Court, which is weighing whether federal laws supersede state regulations allowing certain patients to use the drug. University of Florida pharmacist Paul Doering is available to comment on marijuana use for medicinal purposes and related issues.

鈥淭his is a topic with many complexities,鈥 said Doering, a UF distinguished service professor of pharmacy practice who co-directs UF鈥檚 Drug Information and Pharmacy Resource Center. 鈥淭he inability to separate political, social, medical, economic and other related issues tends to cloud the topic. It鈥檚 a classic case of state鈥檚 rights versus federal rights, which harkens back to the days of the Civil War. It鈥檚 a showdown that unfortunately puts the patient right in the middle of the issue, one that is much more political than it is medical.鈥

Doering is a nationally regarded pharmacy expert who recently testified about national trends in prescription drugs at a federal House of Representatives subcommittee hearing aimed at developing strategies to prevent prescription drug abuse.
