UF’s Gearen, Berrey accept appointments in orthopaedics

Peter F. Gearen, M.D., has been appointed interim chairman of the department of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at the University of Florida College of Medicine.

Gearen, an associate professor of orthopaedics and chief of the division of adult reconstruction and joint replacement, succeeds B. Hudson Berrey Jr., M.D.

Berrey, a professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation with expertise in orthopaedic oncology and musculoskeletal pathology, will now serve as associate chairman of the department of orthopaedics at the Science Center/Jacksonville. Berrey is a nationally known orthopaedic surgeon and surgical educator and is listed in “Best Doctors in America.” During his watch as chairman, the department rose to rank among the top 20 orthopaedics departments in the nation, as recognized by U.S. News and World Report. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.

Gearen, a graduate of Stritch-Loyola Medical School, has served in numerous leadership capacities at the Science Center, most recently as chief of staff at Shands at the University of Florida and Shands at Alachua General Hospital. He also was the department’s interim chairman in 1996. He is a past member of the Shands board of directors and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
